With the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, our programme of history focused educational activities enables young people to learn about the heritage of the Football Club, the history of the Town, and how the two are intrinsically linked.

The Town has experienced extensive demographic change in the last 10 years and while many families have strong ties with the Club, many are not aware of the Club’s rich 133 year history. This project aims to bring Luton Town Football Club into primary school classrooms across Luton to enable the next generation to enjoy and celebrate our amazing heritage and to find out who we are, where we came from and where we are going.

Whilst the main academic focus of the project is linked to the local history element of the National Curriculum, it will also provide a spring board to cross-curricula learning in subjects such as Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Geography, Music, Citizenship and Physical Education. The project uses the power of football to engage and motivate pupils to develop awareness and pride in the history and heritage of Luton and Luton Town Football Club.

The project will be piloted in at least two local schools towards the end of 2018 and then delivered across 20 primary schools during 2019. This delivery will provide direct engagement with over 400 local primary school pupils and indirect engagement through school assembly presentations of over 1,800 pupils.

The aims of the project include the creation of free schemes of work for schools, a set of ‘kids curated’ exhibitions to tour in schools and the local community, an oral history programme, and also the identification of ways by which to better collect, preserve, and share this heritage in the future.

As part of the project we will train volunteers in oral history enabling them to support pupils to collect memories from older family members with the aim of creating podcasts for broadcast on local community radio.
